Many breastfeeding mothers consume herbal galactagogues on a daily basis assuming their positive effect on milk production. The effects and proper usage have not been researched to a satisfactory level.
The Family Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation is funding a research project at the Whitehead Institute, Cambridge,
Massachusetts, USA that takes an interdisciplinary chemical biology approach to identify underlying components and to elucidate their possible mechanisms of action in promoting milk production in the breast tissue. In a second step, the compounds will be analyzed to provide guidance for the proper usage and the safety of these herbs.
