Congratulations TEP 2019 awardees!

The International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation (ISRHML) and FLRF are excited to introduce the most recent Training Expansion Program (TEP) scholarship awardees!

  • Yarden Golan Maor, PhD, of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, for securing a Trainee Bridge Fund to investigate the ‘Genomic characterization of regulatory elements that effect human breastmilk production’ under the mentorship of Professor Nadav Ahituv at the University of California San Francisco.

  • Kozeta Miliku, MD, PhD, of the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba, University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, for securing a Trainee Travel Fund to conduct research on ‘Genome-wide association studies of human milk fatty acids’ in the laboratory of Dr. Qingling Duan at Queen’s University.

  • Ashley Nelson, 2nd-year PhD candidate at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in New York, for securing a Trainee Travel Fund to learn how to derive intestinal enteroids in order to study the ‘Effect of human milk on the intestinal epithelium and its associated immune compartment’ under the mentorship of Dr. Sasirekha Ramani at the Baylor College of Medicine.

  • Tonny Jimmy Owalla, BSc and Research Associate at Med Biotech Laboratories, Kampala-Uganda, for securing a Trainee Travel Fund to study the ‘Secretion of malaria vaccine antigens in breastmilk during asymptomatic/active malaria infection’ under the joint mentorship of Professor Valérie Verhasselt at The University of Western Australia and Professor Thomas Egwang of the Med Biotech Laboratories, Kampala-Uganda.


These talented individuals are the latest to earn merit-based scholarships from TEP. Created in partnership by ISRHML and FLRF, the international initiative aims to help launch or advance careers in the field of lactation, breastfeeding and breastmilk. TEP scholarships come in two sizes:

  • Trainee Bridge Funds (TBF) – up to USD 100,000 for projects that can be completed within one year
  • Trainee Travel Funds (TTF) – up to USD 10,000 for activities that can be completed within three months
