Until now, we had limited insight into why or how breastfeeding influencers on Twitter became, well, influential.

Scientists from the US, Spain and Germany dove deep – beyond numbers of ‘likes’, retweets and followers – to gather nuanced data on the strategies influencers use to communicate breastfeeding information, and which strategies are most effective.

Their findings appear in this open access article on MDPI, 'Breastfeeding Communication Strategies, Challenges and Opportunities in the Twitter-Verse: Perspectives of Influencers and Social Network Analysis'.

“Not attending to the social network data that are present on social media is to miss an enormous practice and research opportunity. Our findings have implications for other areas of exposure-related preventative public health,” writes lead author, Dr Sara Moukarzel, Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Education Studies and the Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation Mother-Milk-Infant Center of Research Excellence, University of California San Diego.
