We are committed to ensuring that breastfeeding is recognized and promoted worldwide as a cornerstone of maternal and child health.
This made it all the more important for us to collaborate with the Institute for Midwifery Science and Reproductive Health at the ZHAW to systematically assess the breastfeeding-friendly environment in Switzerland – using the internationally recognized “Becoming Breastfeeding Friendly” methodology developed by the Yale School of Public Health.
The results, presented on 3 July 2026, in Winterthur, give pause for thought: With a score of 1.1 out of a possible 3 points, Switzerland ranks only in the moderate range – behind neighboring countries such as Germany and Austria. Among other things, there is a lack of a national breastfeeding strategy, adequate funding, regular data collection, and visible political advocacy.
Based on eight assessed “Gears” and 54 benchmarks, a multidisciplinary panel of experts developed clear recommendations for action.
We would like to thank the project team led by Prof. Dr. Susanne Grylka for this valuable groundwork and all the panelists – including National Council member Ursula Zybach, Maria Flothkötter from Germany, Dr. Katharina Lichtner, Executive Director of FLRF, and Urs Stalder of the Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs – for their engaged discussion.
We are convinced that, with the right framework conditions, Switzerland can become a breastfeeding-friendly country for the benefit of mothers and children.
